The world of womens triathlon has changed a lot over the years. There are a lot of women only triathlon events that have been springing up, especially in recent years. It is really a great way for a woman to get involved in triathlons, especially if she is a little timid about getting started. A lot of women around the country will use a womens triathlon as their first even because they are often surrounded by many other first time women participants. Most triathletes have a decent amount of respect for any person that is going to put their effort into the sport but a womens only triathlon still might be a little more comfortable for some. There are several locations including Philadelphia, Las Vegas, and San Diego that hold these type of events. Any woman that wants to get started in this tremendous sport should be able to find one relatively close to home. The most popular womens triathlon is the Danskin Triathlon, which happens to be in its 20th anniversary year. This particular triathlon series is held in several locations around the country. Good luck to all the women that are participating (or thinking of participating) in womens triathlon events!
P.S. This is a more than hilarious blog post about what “NOT” to do when training for a triathlon (or any other sport for that matter)
- World Naked Sprint-like-crazy-athon – I’ve just got back in from my run – it was a tough one. I’d meant to go out for a run with Shakti this morning but certain events, like the title of this blog post and then a rather large steak conspired to thwart me. …

There are some basics that a new triathlete needs to be aware of when starting a triathlon training program. The first word of advice is don’t get overwhelmed by the amount of information that is out there. There are so many so called gurus that want you to watch every calorie and make sure your protein and carb intake are in precise ratios and so on. The fact of the matter is, this is too much for a new triathlete to take on and will end up hindering your training. There are basics that a new triathlete should follow.
- Don’t underestimate your need to drink a lot of water
- Cut down on processed sugars, especially soda pop, candy, junk food, etc…
- Protein, Carbs, Fat are all needed daily but don’t be too concerned with exact ratios
Everyone hears that our bodies are made mostly of water but this can’t be emphasized enough during a triathlon training program. Not drinking enough water, even outside of a training day, can lead to fatigue and injury. The need for water on training days and race day are even more vital. The reason processed sugars are so bad for triathletes is the sugar impedes that body to recuperate. Refined sugar depletes the adrenal glands that control our “fight or flight” responses which are essential to training. And the last word in regards to nutrition, don’t cut out all fat but don’t overdo it either. A palm size amount of protein per meal is about all you need and the same with your carbs. Eating more often, 5 to 6 times a day, and having smaller portions is always healthier for a triathlete, as well as the everyday person.

I have to get on my own little soapbox for a second for every person that is new to triathlons. There is no quicker way for a person to tell that you are brand new than saying you just started “triathalon training.” It ISN’T TRIATH-A-LON! Its TRIATHLON! There is no “A” anywhere in the word. There never has been and there never will be. There is no such thing as triathalon training. Okay, now that I’ve calmed down a little bit, remember this. Please! Nobody wants to be the new guy when it comes to anything. Walk the walk and talk the talk as they say. You aren’t trainining for a triathalon; it isn’t a sprint triathalon or a half triathalon. It is TRIATHLON! If you show up to an event and talk about the triathalon training you have been doing, you will probably get a smirk from the veterans. To veteran triathletes, calling it a triathalon is almost like disrespecting their sport and way of life. No one likes to have their name constantly mispronounced and it can feel just as insulting to triathletes. Anyways, that is just my little soapbox for the day. Enjoy your sprint triathlon training and always remember, it isn’t triathalon training!
