Beginner Triathlete Training – Get Off the Couch!

Beginner Triathlete Training can literally be for everybody. It doesn’t matter whether you have any level of fitness or not, programs designed around the beginner triathlete will help focus on getting a base level of fitness before ever getting into the technical side of triathlons. Don’t be scared! It’s time to get off the couch!

So how does one get started with a beginner triathlete training program?

Base Level of Fitness

Emphasis should be given to making sure you have a really solid basis of exercise. Of course, it is always recommended that a person get clearance from his or her doctor to make sure there will be no complications with the extra exertion required from an exercise program. A new triathlete is going to experience a whole different range of motion, usually far from their current level of exercise. Far beyond just swimming, biking and running; a beginner triathlete can get a base level of fitness from any and all types of physical activity. Walking, playing basketball and weightlifting are just a couple different ways that many individuals help their body get used to more physical activity. Pick something you enjoy (just make sure it gets your heart rate up) and it will be easier to start your fitness training.

Strength Training

Once a person has established a minimum level of fitness, starting a strength training program is essential. Beginner triathletes need to realize that lifting weights and gaining muscle strength and tone is essential for becoming a better triathlete. Body weight exercises like push ups, sit ups and other core exercises are a great start. Incorporating free weight exercises like bicep curls and leg presses will follow.

Technical Training

Once a base level of fitness is established, the technical side of all three triathlon sports can be implemented. Proper running technique should be given priority since it will save your knees, shins and back from aggravation and injury. Focus on proper swimming technique and cycling cadence will take time and should be only focused on further down the training timeline.

Make a commitment to yourself to start a training program for a beginner triathlete and you will quickly find yourself off the couch! You will experience a greater level of fitness, energy and enjoyment from life and once you have completed your first triathlon, revel in the fact that you have accomplished something that only 1.5% of people ever have done!

Although many people get started with triathlons just for fun and you will gradually make improvements, getting the proper training can dramatically increase your performance.
